ChatGPT Sites review: Can you really build a website in seconds with AI?

ChatGPT Sites is OpenAI’s newest trick: describe a website in plain English, and it generates a live page in under 15 seconds. No code, no templates, no setup wizard. The page gets a shareable URL instantly. It sounds too good to be true, and partly it is. But for the right use case, it’s genuinely useful.

What ChatGPT Sites actually is

ChatGPT Sites is a feature built into ChatGPT’s Work mode (available on Plus, Team, and Enterprise plans). It’s not a separate tool or app. You open ChatGPT, switch to Work mode, describe the website you want, and it generates a single-page site complete with text, layout, and styling. The site gets a live URL you can share immediately.

Think of it as the portfolio-page version of Claude’s Artifacts or a much simpler vibe coding experience. There’s no code to touch, no template gallery to scroll through, and no build step to wait on. You just describe, and it appears.

How to create a site in ChatGPT

The process is about as simple as it gets. Here’s what you do:

  1. Open ChatGPT and switch to Work mode from the model selector.
  2. Type a description of the website you want. Be specific. \”A portfolio site for a freelance graphic designer named Sarah, dark theme, with sections for work samples, about me, and contact\” works way better than \”make me a website.\”
  3. ChatGPT generates the site and gives you a live link. That’s it.

After the initial generation, you can ask ChatGPT to tweak things. Change the color scheme, swap a section, rewrite the bio text. Each revision regenerates the page with a fresh version, and all previous iterations stay accessible. That matters more than you’d expect when iterating on a design.

What works surprisingly well

For single-page sites that exist to look professional and convey basic information, ChatGPT Sites punches well above its weight. A few things stood out during testing:

The speed is real. Not marketing-hype real. Literally-look-at-the-clock real. The initial generation took about 11 seconds. Revisions were even faster. If you’ve ever spent hours wrestling with Squarespace’s grid or WordPress’s block editor, that number alone might sell you.

The design quality is solid. Not jaw-dropping, but clean and modern. Proper typography, decent spacing, coherent color choices. It doesn’t look like a generic template. It looks like someone with decent taste put it together in 10 minutes. For a portfolio, a landing page, or a simple business card site, that’s plenty. The dark theme it generated for my test actually had some personality. It wasn’t just a dark background with white text, it had actual contrast hierarchy and intentional accent colors.

The copy is actually decent. ChatGPT writes the page content too, not just the layout. The text it generated felt natural, not AI-stuffed. No robotic filler or bloated paragraphs. It adapted tone based on the prompt, which matters more than people think.

Where ChatGPT Sites falls short

Here’s the part the hype skips over. ChatGPT Sites has real limitations, and they matter depending on what you need.

No multi-page sites

Every ChatGPT Site is a single page. One scrollable page with sections. You can’t create a blog with separate post pages. You can’t build a store with individual product pages. If your project needs more than one page, this tool isn’t ready for it yet.

No interactive features

Want a contact form that actually sends emails? A booking widget? A payment button? None of that works. ChatGPT Sites generates static content, period. The buttons and links are visual only, not functional. This is the single biggest limitation. A portfolio without a working contact form is like a storefront with the door glued shut.

No custom domain

Your site lives on a ChatGPT URL, something like chatgpt.com/s/your-site-name. There’s no way to connect your own domain right now. For a quick share or a temp page, that’s fine. For anything you’d print on a business card or link from LinkedIn, it’s a tough sell. The URL makes it obvious the page was AI-generated, which might not match the professional impression you’re going for.

Limited design control

Natural language changes work, but fine-tuning doesn’t exist. Want the heading to be exactly 48px? Need the button border-radius at 8px instead of 12px? Not happening. You describe what you want in words, and ChatGPT interprets. Sometimes that matches what’s in your head. Sometimes it doesn’t, and there’s no CSS panel to fix it.

Who should actually use ChatGPT Sites

This tool isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine. It’s best for a few specific situations:

Freelancers needing a quick portfolio. If you don’t have a personal site and a potential client asks for one tonight, ChatGPT Sites gets you something presentable in seconds. It’s not your forever website. It’s your \”here’s my work while I build the real thing\” website. The OpenAI announcement positions it exactly this way: fast, temporary, shareable.

Event or project landing pages. Running a workshop? Launching a side project? Need a single page with details and a sign-up link? This handles that without the overhead of a full website builder. You describe the event, it builds the page, you share the link. No account creation, no billing setup, no choosing between pricing tiers.

Prototyping and ideation. Planning a real website and want to visualize the layout before hiring a designer or committing to a platform? ChatGPT Sites works as a rapid prototyping tool. Generate a version, screenshot it, send it to your designer with notes. Faster than sketching on paper, and the output is closer to what the final product will actually look like. You can test three different directions in the time it would take to set up a Figma file.

Who should skip it

If you need a contact form, a blog, e-commerce, SEO optimization, or a custom domain, you’re better off with a proper website builder or a no-code platform. ChatGPT Sites is a starting point, not a replacement for the real thing. Treating it like one will just frustrate you.

The bottom line on ChatGPT Sites

ChatGPT Sites does exactly what it promises and nothing more. It builds a single-page website in seconds, and that website looks better than it has any right to. For the narrow use case of \”I need a simple page that looks professional and I need it right now,\” it’s genuinely impressive.

But it’s not a website builder in the traditional sense. It’s more like an AI-generated digital flyer. Useful, fast, and surprisingly polished for what it is. Just don’t expect it to replace Squarespace, Webflow, or WordPress. It won’t.

If you have ChatGPT Plus or Team, try it next time you need a quick landing page. The 15 seconds it takes to generate might save you an hour of template-hunting. For anything beyond that, you’ll want the real tools.
