How Shopify AI search drives more sales for your store - Logic & Layers

Shopify just reported something that should make every online store owner pay attention. AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores tripled in the second quarter of 2026. Not doubled. Tripled. Meanwhile, revenue hit $3.6 billion, up 36% from last year. The interesting part? AI search isn’t replacing Google for these merchants. It’s adding to it. And small stores are benefiting the most.

If you sell products online — or want to start — this matters. Here’s what Shopify AI search actually does and what you should do about it.

The numbers that changed the game

During Shopify’s Q2 2026 earnings call, president Harley Finkelstein laid out some numbers that caught people off guard. AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores tripled year-over-year. That’s not a small bump. That’s a structural shift in how people find products.

And here’s the part that surprises most people: traditional Google search traffic is still growing too. It’s up 1.3 times over the past two years, and search still accounts for roughly a third of all storefront sessions. So no, AI search isn’t killing Google for ecommerce. It’s growing alongside it.

The company’s revenue beat expectations by a wide margin ($3.6 billion vs. the $3.4 billion Wall Street forecast). Shopify credits AI search as a significant contributor to that growth. This isn’t theoretical. It’s showing up in real sales numbers for real merchants.

How AI search works differently from Google

Understanding why this works requires a quick mental model shift. When someone types “car seat” into Google, the search engine ranks results by popularity, backlinks, and keyword relevance. The stores with the best SEO and biggest ad budgets win.

When someone asks an AI assistant “what’s the best car seat that fits three across a sedan?”, the AI does something fundamentally different. It doesn’t just look for the keyword “car seat.” It queries Shopify’s product catalog with structured data — dimensions, weight limits, compatibility tags, user reviews — and matches products against the buyer’s specific intent.

Keywords vs intent

Google search is keyword-matching with context signals. AI search is intent-matching with structured product data. The distinction matters because it changes which products get surfaced.

A niche product with the exact specifications a buyer needs can now surface in an AI search result even if the merchant has zero SEO expertise. That’s huge for small stores that can’t compete with big brands on Google rankings.

Structured data is the new SEO

This is where it gets practical for store owners. If AI assistants are querying product catalogs directly, then the quality of your product data matters more than ever. Think about it: the AI needs to understand what your product is, what it does, what it’s compatible with, and who it’s for. If your product page only has a two-sentence description and a photo, the AI has very little to work with.

The merchants benefiting most from Shopify AI search are the ones with rich, detailed product listings. Not keyword-stuffed descriptions aimed at Google crawlers, but genuine, helpful information that describes the product’s specifications, use cases, and compatibility.

Why small stores benefit the most

This is the part that should get small merchants excited. Shopify specifically noted that AI search has “particularly benefited the long tail of ecommerce, including the smaller merchants that make up the majority of its customer base.”

Why? Because AI search is better at matching specific intent with niche products. If someone asks an AI for “a waterproof phone case for Galaxy S25 that works with wireless charging,” and you sell exactly that, the AI can find you even if you have zero domain authority on Google.

Google tends to surface the same popular brands for generic queries. AI search digs deeper into product catalogs and finds matches that better serve the buyer’s specific need. That levels the playing field significantly.

A small store selling specialized hiking gear, custom phone accessories, or niche kitchen gadgets can suddenly become discoverable to buyers who would have never found them through traditional search. That’s not hype. Shopify’s own data backs it up.

What Shopify store owners should do right now

If you run a Shopify store (or are thinking about starting one), here are the concrete steps that will position you to benefit from AI search traffic.

Write detailed product descriptions

This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Every product in your store should have a description that answers: what is it, what does it do, who is it for, what are its specifications, and what makes it different from alternatives.

Don’t write for SEO bots. Write for a smart assistant that’s trying to understand your product well enough to recommend it to the right person. Include dimensions, materials, compatibility information, use cases, and any other details that help someone decide if this product is right for them.

Add specifications and attributes

Shopify lets you add product attributes like size, color, weight, material, and compatibility. Fill them all out. AI search agents query these structured fields directly. The more data you provide, the better the AI can match your products to buyer intent.

Think of it as feeding the AI the information it needs to recommend your product. Missing fields mean missing recommendations.

Use Shopify’s built-in AI tools

Shopify has been rolling out AI-powered features for merchants, including AI-generated product descriptions, smart categorization, and automated product recommendations. These tools help ensure your product data is structured and complete — exactly what AI search needs.

The AI description tool is worth using as a starting point, then editing to add your specific knowledge. Don’t just publish the AI-generated text as-is. Add the details that only you know about your products — that’s what makes Shopify AI search surface your listings over competitors.

Make sure your store is in Shopify’s product catalog

Shopify’s AI search queries its own catalog, which is powered by the product data from all Shopify stores. Making sure your products are properly listed, categorized, and described ensures you’re part of that catalog. This isn’t optional — it’s the foundation.

If you’re selling on a standalone site outside Shopify, this AI search traffic goes to Shopify merchants, not to you. That’s worth considering if you’re choosing a platform.

The tools helping stores get found by AI

Beyond Shopify’s built-in features, several tools are emerging to help merchants optimize for AI-driven discovery:

  • Shopify Magic (built into the platform) generates product descriptions, handles customer support responses, and provides product recommendations
  • Jasper AI helps write product descriptions optimized for both human readers and AI assistants
  • Writer provides AI-powered product content that includes structured data

The key insight across all of these: they’re not about gaming algorithms. They’re about making your product information clearer, more complete, and more useful — which is exactly what Shopify AI search rewards. Merchants who invest in better product data are seeing the results in their traffic numbers.

For merchants who are already automating parts of their business, tools like AI content pipelines can help keep your product information fresh without manual effort for every update.

This is not replacing Google (yet)

Let’s keep things in perspective. Google is still Shopify merchants’ largest source of buyer traffic, and it’s growing. AI search is additive, not replacement — at least for now. The smart play is to optimize for both.

That means continuing your Google SEO efforts (keywords, backlinks, content marketing) while also ensuring your product data is structured and complete enough for AI assistants to surface your products. Think of it as bilingual marketing: speak the language of search engines and the language of AI agents.

The merchants who do both will see the most traffic. The ones who only optimize for Google will miss a growing slice of buyers who are starting their shopping journey with ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude instead of Google.

The bottom line: Shopify AI search is driving real traffic to real stores right now, and the merchants who treat their product data as seriously as their SEO will come out ahead.
