How to disable Gemini in Gmail and Google Docs (Step-by-step guide)

You open Google Docs to write something important. Instead of a clean page, a giant Gemini toolbar stares back at you from the bottom of the screen. It wasn’t there yesterday. You didn’t ask for it. And there’s no obvious “X” to make it go away.

Sound familiar? Google is rolling out Gemini AI features across Workspace — toolbars, menus, audio buttons — whether you want them or not. The rollout is inconsistent (some people see it, others don’t) and the off switch is buried in a place you’d never think to look.

Here’s how to get your clean interface back.

Why you might want to disable Gemini

Not everyone wants AI in their writing space. Maybe you prefer Claude or ChatGPT for actual writing help. Maybe you’re privacy-conscious and don’t want Google reading your drafts. Or maybe you just find the toolbar distracting.

Whatever your reason, you have two main options. One is official but comes with trade-offs. The other is a free extension that removes AI across all Google products — including Search — without breaking the features you actually use.

Method 1: The Gmail settings toggle (official but has trade-offs)

Here’s the weird part: the setting to disable Gemini in Google Docs lives in Gmail. Not Docs. Not Drive. Gmail.

Step-by-step: Turn off Smart features in Gmail

  1. Open Gmail in your browser
  2. Click the gear icon (top right) → See all settings
  3. Stay on the General tab
  4. Scroll down to Smart features and personalization
  5. Uncheck the box
  6. Google will ask you to confirm — click Turn off
  7. Wait a minute, then refresh your Google Docs tab

The Gemini menu, audio button, and that giant bottom toolbar should all disappear.

What you lose when you disable this setting

This is the catch. Turning off “Smart features and personalization” doesn’t just hide the Docs toolbar. It also kills:

  • Smart Compose (gray-text suggestions while typing)
  • Smart Reply (one-tap email responses)
  • Grammar suggestions and autocorrect in Gmail
  • Nudges (follow-up reminders)
  • Gmail’s built-in spellcheck (your browser’s spellcheck still works)

If you rely on any of those, this method hurts more than it helps.

Method 2: Bye Bye Gemini extension (easier, no trade-offs)

If you want the AI gone but keep your Gmail productivity features, install Bye Bye Gemini from the Chrome Web Store.

How to install and use the extension

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store and search “Bye Bye Gemini”
  2. Click Add to Chrome → Add extension
  3. That’s it. The extension works automatically.

No settings to configure. No account needed. It uses CSS to hide every Gemini element across Google’s productivity suite.

What it removes (Docs, Gmail, Drive, Search)

Product What disappears
Google Docs Bottom toolbar, Gemini menu, audio button, side panel
Gmail “Help me write” button, Gemini side panel, AI compose prompts
Google Drive Gemini sidebar, file summarization prompts
Google Search AI Overviews (the generated answers at the top of results)

The Search part is a bonus. If you’ve been frustrated by AI Overviews pushing real results down, this kills them too.

Works on: Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi (any Chromium browser). For Safari, search “Bye Bye Gemini Safari” — there’s a similar extension.

If you use Google Workspace (company account)

Here’s the bad news: you can’t disable this yourself.

Google Workspace accounts are managed by your organization’s admin. The AI feature controls live in the Google Workspace Admin Console, and only someone with admin privileges can toggle them off.

What to ask your IT admin

Send them this link: Google Workspace Admin Help — Manage Gemini features

Ask them to:

  1. Sign in to the Admin Console
  2. Go to Apps → Google Workspace → Gemini
  3. Disable the features for your organizational unit (or specific users)

If they push back, bring cookies. IT people respond well to cookies.

Bonus: Remove AI Overviews from Google Search too

The Bye Bye Gemini extension handles this automatically. But if you prefer a manual approach:

  1. Do a search on Google
  2. Click the Web filter (usually under the search bar, sometimes in “More”)
  3. Bookmark that URL — it forces the classic web results view

Or use the “udm=14” trick: add `&udm=14` to any Google Search URL to force web-only results.

Which method should you choose?

If you… Use this method
Don’t use Smart Compose, Smart Reply, or Gmail spellcheck Method 1 (Gmail settings) — native, no extension needed
Want to keep Gmail AI features but kill Docs/Search AI Method 2 (Bye Bye Gemini extension)
Use a company Workspace account Ask your admin (neither method works for you)
Want AI gone from everything including Search Method 2 (Bye Bye Gemini)

The bottom line

Google wants you to use Gemini. They’ve made it deliberately awkward to turn off. But you have options.

For personal accounts: the Bye Bye Gemini extension is the cleanest win. It removes the clutter, keeps your Gmail productivity tools, and even cleans up Search.

For Workspace accounts: you’re at your admin’s mercy. Forward them the link. Bring cookies.

Either way — your screen, your rules. Take back the whitespace.
