There’s a 4 GB file sitting on your computer right now that you never agreed to download. It’s called Gemini Nano, it’s Google’s on-device AI model, and Chrome has been quietly installing it on millions of machines without asking anyone. Delete it, and the browser just downloads it again.

What Gemini Nano actually is

Gemini Nano is a stripped-down version of Google’s Gemini AI that runs entirely on your own hardware instead of in the cloud. Chrome uses it for small features: the “Help me write” tool in text boxes, on-device scam detection, smart paste, page summaries, and those suggested names for tab groups.

None of that sounds sinister. The problem is where it lives and how it got there. Privacy researcher Alexander Hanff documented the whole thing, and his full technical breakdown is worth your time. Here’s the short version.

How Chrome installs it without asking

Hanff ran a Chrome profile that no human ever touched. It was driven by an automated audit tool, so zero clicks, zero keyboard input, zero AI features opened. Within days, that profile contained the full 4 GB model.

The macOS filesystem logs gave him a timestamped trail. Chrome created the folder, spawned unpacker processes, and moved the finished model into place 14 minutes and 28 seconds later. All of this happened in the background while an ordinary web page sat open in a tab.

Worse, Chrome profiled the hardware first. The browser read the GPU and memory to decide whether the machine “qualified” for the model, then pushed it. The only sign of the whole operation was a settings page that appeared alongside the download, which means by Chrome’s own design the install starts before you could possibly refuse it.

And here’s the part that keeps repeating: users on Windows discovered the file, deleted it, and watched Chrome quietly fetch it again. As a result, the only reliable way to get rid of it is to disable the underlying feature first, then clean up the disk.

The AI Mode trick you should know about

You’d think a locally installed AI model means your browser AI runs locally. Not quite, and this matters.

When Chrome shows you the “AI Mode” pill in the address bar, that feature sends every query to Google’s servers. The local Gemini Nano model isn’t involved at all. Two separate systems, two separate purposes, and the most visible one never touches the model parked on your disk.

So you pay the storage cost for a local model, while the AI you actually see and click runs in the cloud anyway. That’s the arrangement in plain terms.

Meanwhile, the features that do use the local model hide in right-click menus that most people never open. Researchers who study deceptive design have called this pattern out publicly, and it’s hard to argue with them.

Why Google gets away with it

Three things work in Google’s favor, and none of them is an accident.

First, the folder name. OptGuideOnDeviceModel tells you nothing. A name like “GeminiNanoLLM” would make the connection obvious to anyone auditing their disk. Instead you get internal jargon that hides in plain sight.

Second, the documentation gap. Google explains what its AI features do, but nowhere in normal user-facing material does it say “this costs you 4 GB of disk, downloaded silently.” The information exists in admin-level docs, which is not where a regular person looks.

Third, scale works as cover. Chrome has somewhere between 3.4 and 3.8 billion users, so a 4 GB push multiplies out to an enormous amount of bandwidth and storage, yet each individual case looks too small to fight about.

Legal experts have pointed out that storing files on someone’s device without consent runs into Europe’s ePrivacy rules and GDPR transparency requirements. Whether regulators act is a different question. For now, the practical response is yours alone to make.

How to check if it’s on your machine

It takes about a minute. Do this:

  1. Open your Chrome profile folder. On Windows, that’s usually C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default. On a Mac, look in ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default.
  2. Search that folder for OptGuideOnDeviceModel.
  3. Check the folder size. If it’s there with a weights.bin inside, congratulations, you’ve been enrolled.

The folder may not exist on every machine. Chrome checks your hardware first, so older or low-memory computers often get skipped. If you use multiple Chrome profiles, check each one, because the model lands per profile.

For example, one reader on Reddit found it three times across three profiles and wondered why his SSD kept shrinking. Sound familiar?

How to stop the re-download for good

Simply deleting the folder won’t work, since Chrome treats that as a mistake to correct. You need to switch the feature off first. Here’s the sequence that actually sticks:

  1. Open Chrome and type chrome://flags in the address bar.
  2. Search for “on device model” and find the entry related to the on-device model (on current versions it appears as an optimization guide setting).
  3. Set it to Disabled and relaunch the browser.
  4. Now go back to the profile folder and delete OptGuideOnDeviceModel.
  5. Confirm the space comes back and stays back after a restart.

If you run Chrome in a workplace, your IT admin can block the model download with Google’s enterprise policy for generative AI local models. Home users don’t have that console, so the flags route is the practical one.

Pro tip: while you’re in settings, review the other AI toggles too. Chrome turns several of them on by default, and the switches are scattered across menus most people never visit.

Should you even remove it?

Honest answer: it depends on your disk and your habits.

If you have a roomy SSD and actually use Help me write, Gemini Nano does its job locally, which is more privacy-friendly than cloud AI. Keeping it costs you space and nothing else.

However, if your drive is tight, you never use those features, or the principle of silent installs bothers you, remove it. The space alone is worth it for many laptops. And given that Chrome’s headline AI Mode doesn’t even use the local model, most casual users lose very little by switching it off.

My take? Turn it off. A browser’s job is to load web pages, not to pre-install AI you didn’t request on the off chance you might someday want it. The bigger picture

This story is really about defaults. Companies ship AI features switched on because most people never open settings, and storage is cheap enough that nobody complains loudly. Multiply that by a billion devices and the math works out great for them, less so for you.

The fix is boring but real: check your machine, flip the switch, and tell one other person how. Regulators may eventually weigh in on silent AI installs. Until then, your disk drive is your responsibility, and now you know what’s hiding in it.

Take five minutes today. Search for that folder, decide whether you want a 4 GB houseguest, and reclaim the space if you don’t. Chrome will survive the rejection.
