OpenAI Cursor breakup: what it means and what to use next

If you use Cursor, Friday brought news you probably didn’t expect: OpenAI is cutting off the coding tool’s access to its models. The OpenAI Cursor breakup is official, the deadline is November 12, and the reason involves SpaceX, Elon Musk, and a $60 billion check.

Most coverage assumes you’ve followed every twist of the Musk versus Altman saga. You don’t need any of that context to understand what changes for you, though. So here’s the plain-English version.

Wait, what is Cursor again?

Quick primer for anyone who’s only heard the name. Cursor is an AI-powered code editor, and it exploded in popularity because you can describe what you want in plain English and it writes the code for you. You don’t need to be a software engineer to use it. Plenty of non-developers use it to build small tools, automate parts of their job, or fix things around their own projects.

Cursor works by plugging into models from multiple AI companies, kind of like a TV that accepts several streaming services. You pick a model inside the app, and that model does the heavy lifting. The OpenAI Cursor partnership dates back to Cursor’s early days, when GPT-4 first made the app famous. OpenAI’s GPT models have been a popular choice since the beginning. That’s the piece that’s now going away.

Why OpenAI is cutting Cursor off (the $60 billion elephant)

Two weeks ago, SpaceX finished buying Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, for a reported $60 billion. That deal didn’t come out of nowhere. SpaceX secured an option back in April, either to buy Cursor outright or pay $10 billion to build AI tech together. It exercised the option in June, right after its own IPO, and the acquisition closed in mid-August.

Now Cursor sits inside SpaceXAI, Elon Musk’s AI division. Cursor’s CEO, Michael Truell, reportedly reports directly to Musk. On an all-hands call, Musk told employees that Grok, SpaceXAI’s own model, was “playing catchup” in the AI race and singled out Anthropic as the company to beat.

Keep that detail in mind. It explains everything else. Whatever you think of the OpenAI Cursor split, the commercial logic here is straightforward. SpaceX didn’t buy Cursor just for its 10 million users. It bought a distribution channel for its own AI models, plus a data center-sized reason to train them. Cursor was paying retail prices to Anthropic and OpenAI, two of its direct competitors, every single time a user generated code. SpaceX, meanwhile, had Colossus, its enormous supercomputer, roughly the equivalent of a million Nvidia H100 GPUs, sitting with idle capacity. Any company would look at that math and think about cutting out the middleman.

That’s the backdrop for OpenAI’s official statement, posted Friday evening, which put it bluntly:

We cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk’s companies violating contracts.

OpenAI pointed to X as a specific example. The company says X broke the terms of an existing OpenAI contract after Musk bought Twitter. There’s also the old lawsuit from 2024, where Musk sued OpenAI’s founders over the nonprofit mission. A federal jury sided with OpenAI this May, and Musk is appealing. None of that is new, but it explains why a purely technical partnership ended over trust issues, not code quality.

What changes for Cursor users on November 12

OpenAI says November 12 is the maximum notice its contract allows. After that date, Cursor loses access to OpenAI models. Concretely, that means the GPT models you might pick in Cursor’s model menu will disappear. For OpenAI Cursor users, that’s the moment the app starts feeling different, because anything that runs on OpenAI’s engines stops working that day, and there’s no indication of a grace period.

The timing actually works in your favor. You’ve got about two and a half months. That’s plenty of time to test alternatives without rushing a decision at 11 p.m. before a deadline.

One important thing: OpenAI says it wants to help developers through the transition and plans to go “above and beyond” with the handoff. What that looks like in practice, nobody knows yet. Don’t count on a graceful migration path. Treat November 12 as the hard stop.

Does Cursor still work?

Yes. This is the part most headlines bury.

Cursor runs on models from several providers, and the OpenAI Cursor connection was just one of several, not the only one. The app will keep working with Anthropic’s Claude models, which it already supports, and with Composer, Cursor’s own in-house model. That in-house model is the interesting one. One of the reasons SpaceX wanted Cursor in the first place is that Colossus compute, which is perfect for training Composer into something much stronger than it is today. In a weird way, the OpenAI breakup might accelerate Cursor’s own model development.

So the practical answer: Cursor won’t die on November 12. It just loses one family of models.

Now the open question that could sting later: will Anthropic make the same call? Anthropic has its own compute agreement with SpaceX, which complicates things. If Anthropic ever decides to follow OpenAI’s lead, Cursor would lose its biggest remaining model provider. That’s speculation, not a prediction, but it’s worth watching. The company that wins this drama gets to hold the future of a very popular tool in its hands.

Best Cursor alternatives right now

If you’d rather not wait around, here’s what to test before November.

  • OpenAI Codex. Ironic, but the company that just cut Cursor off makes an excellent coding agent of its own. Codex runs in the cloud, works from your browser and terminal, and uses the exact GPT models that will vanish from Cursor. If you love those models, this is your natural home. The free tier is enough to test whether you like the workflow.
  • Gemini CLI. Google’s free command-line coding tool. It gets updated constantly, costs nothing to try, and works fine for personal projects. Great second option even if you stay on Cursor for everything else.
  • Keep Cursor with Claude and Composer. Also a valid choice. You don’t have to switch software, just adjust which models you use. If you’re worried about token costs, there are routing tools that help you spend less on Cursor too, which pairs well with this option.

Try two of these over the next couple of weekends. The goal isn’t to pick a winner today. It’s to know the exit door is unlocked before you need it. Switching editors mid-project is stressful, so do the switching while the deadline is far away.

The bigger lesson about AI tools

Here’s the thing nobody wants to hear: every AI product you love is a business deal wearing a friendly interface.

The models inside your favorite tool can change, disappear, or get more expensive overnight. That’s not a Cursor problem. It’s how the whole industry works right now. OpenAI and Anthropic sell their best models to rivals and cut them off when the rivalry turns personal. One vendor pulling the plug can reshape a tool you use daily, and no contract protects you as an end user.

The defense is boring but effective: keep two tools warm instead of one. The same logic applies to picking free coding models, where the field changes monthly. You don’t need to be loyal to software. You need software that’s loyal to you, and the only way to test that is to know what else exists before you’re forced to find out.

Takeaway

If you use Cursor, don’t panic and don’t procrastinate. Keep using it with Claude and Composer, but open a free Claude Code or Codex account this week and run one real project on it. By November 12, you’ll know exactly where you’d go if you had to.

And keep an eye on what Anthropic decides. If Anthropic follows OpenAI’s lead, that’s your cue to move for real.
