ChatGPT Sketch turns rough drawings into finished AI images.

A bad doodle used to stay a bad doodle. Now you can scribble a lopsided cat with your mouse, type a sentence, and get a finished image back in seconds.

ChatGPT Sketch is OpenAI’s newest way to make AI images, and it shipped on September 8 alongside the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. Instead of wrestling with a paragraph-long prompt, you draw what you want, describe the style, and let the model do the heavy lifting.

Why prompting alone falls short

Here’s a frustration every AI image user knows. You want a specific layout, so you write “a living room with the couch on the left, a big window behind it, and a lamp in the corner.” The result looks great. It’s also completely wrong. The couch is on the right, the window vanished, and somehow there’s a fireplace you never asked for.

Words are a lossy way to describe visual ideas. That’s the whole problem. Describing where things should sit in a frame is awkward in plain English, because spatial language is vague (“left of what, exactly?”). Meanwhile, almost anyone can grab a mouse and draw a rectangle where the couch goes.

So OpenAI built Sketch into ChatGPT to close that gap. And honestly, it’s the most useful addition to the app’s image tools since custom stickers arrived.

When to draw instead of type

Not every image needs a sketch. Photorealistic scenes with no specific layout (“a cabin in snowy woods”) work fine as plain prompts. ChatGPT Sketch earns its keep when placement is the whole point: mockups, floor plans, logo concepts, comic panels, product shots where the object sits exactly somewhere.

Rule of thumb. If you’d gesture with your hands while explaining it, draw it. If you’d only describe a mood, just type it.

How to use ChatGPT Sketch (step by step)

The whole thing takes about a minute once you’ve done it once. No new app, no download.

  1. Open ChatGPT on desktop, mobile, or web. Type @Sketch in the chat box. A drawing window pops up. You can also get there by choosing Images from the menu and picking Sketch from the options at the top.
  2. Draw your idea. The drawing tool looks a bit like MS Paint from 1995, and that’s fine. Rough is the point. A rectangle for a couch. A circle for a logo. Stick figures welcome.
  3. Add a description. After you tap the blue check button, ChatGPT loads a prompt asking the model to turn your sketch into a full image. This is where you add the details: “make it a cozy Scandinavian living room, warm evening light, photorealistic.”
  4. Refine with comments. Once the image appears, you can click directly on parts of it and leave a comment about what to change. A tester at The Verge used this to change a cat’s eyes from blue to green, and it worked on the first try.
  5. Download or keep editing. Want the subject on its own? Use Remove BG to strip the background into a transparent PNG, which drops straight into presentations or design files.

That’s the core loop. Draw, describe, refine. It sounds almost too simple, but the results hold up.

Three prompt patterns that work well with sketches

After watching how people use ChatGPT Sketch, a few patterns keep showing up in the results worth stealing:

  • “Keep the exact layout of my sketch, make it photorealistic, warm lighting.” The layout-lock instruction is what stops the model from rearranging your furniture.
  • “Turn this sketch into a flat vector illustration, bold outlines, three colors.” Rough drawings convert beautifully into clean vector looks, and the style does the heavy lifting.
  • “Keep the composition but make it [style].” Composition from your drawing, style from your words. That division of labor is the whole trick.

What else came with Images 2.5

Sketch is the headline, but the September 8 update packed in more:

  • Templates. Start from formats like posters, flyers, and product photos. You fill in the message, design elements, and style instead of starting from nothing.
  • Image comments. Pin feedback to specific spots on an image. Way more precise than “make the thing on the left smaller.”
  • Prompt sharing. When you share an image, you can include the prompt that made it. Whoever receives it can swap in their own photo and details, then generate their own version.
  • Better multi-turn editing. OpenAI says the model follows editing instructions more reliably across several rounds of changes. Anyone who’s had an image mutate after the third “fix” knows why this matters.
  • Speed. Generation latency dropped up to 50% compared with Images 2.0, per OpenAI.

The model also renders more natural lighting and richer textures, and it holds onto faces and products from reference photos more consistently. For anyone making product mockups or social posts, that last part is the real upgrade. Together, the changes make ChatGPT Sketch feel less like a gimmick and more like a default starting point for AI images.

Who actually benefits from this

Freelancers putting together quick client mockups. Small business owners who need a flyer tonight. Anyone who thinks in shapes but can’t draw a straight line (so, most of us).

There’s a real money angle too. If you sell on Etsy or run a small shop, sketching a product concept and generating a clean render beats paying for stock photography that almost fits. It’s the same workflow people already use to make custom sticker packs with ChatGPT, just with a faster starting point.

Worth noting: Sketch isn’t trying to replace Figma or a real design tool. It replaces the blank-canvas panic. You bring the idea, the model brings the polish.

The catch

Sketches stay rough, and the results depend on how well you describe the style afterward. A vague doodle plus a vague prompt gets you a vague image. The fix is simple: treat the drawing as the layout and the text as the art direction. Give both a little thought and the output improves dramatically.

Also, everyone gets Images 2.5, but free-tier users still hit usage limits faster than paid plans. If you’re generating all afternoon, you’ll feel the cap.

Quick take

ChatGPT Sketch is the rare feature that makes AI image generation easier by asking for less. You don’t need prompt-writing chops. You need a mouse and thirty seconds of doodling.

Open ChatGPT, type @Sketch, and draw something terrible. Turn it into something good. Once you’ve done it once, you’ll start sketching layouts for everything.
