OpenAI paused new ChatGPT Pro sign-ups citing Astra demand

Want ChatGPT Pro at $200 a month? Get in line, because OpenAI just locked the door. New ChatGPT Pro sign-ups are paused while the company wrestles with demand for Astra, its newest and most powerful model.

What actually happened

On September 10, OpenAI quietly disabled new sign-ups to ChatGPT Pro, its $200-a-month top tier. Tibo Sottiaux, the product lead overseeing Codex and ChatGPT, broke the news on X with a line that tells you everything: “We wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible.”

Translation: too many people were signing up, and each Pro subscriber hammers the infrastructure harder than any other plan. Rather than slow down existing users, OpenAI froze the front door for new ones.

The squeeze had been building for days. Two days earlier, Sottiaux had already warned that demand for Astra was “really unprecedented,” adding he’d never seen anything like it, even during previous growth spikes. As TechCrunch reported, Astra itself launched on September 3, rolling out across Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise tiers with big claims about reasoning, coding, and computer use. OpenAI even billed it as the start of the “AGI era,” which is roughly the equivalent of taping a “free money” sign to the door and wondering why the crowd showed up.

There’s no reopening date. OpenAI hasn’t said how long the pause lasts or how many people are trying to sign up daily.

Who’s affected (and who’s not)

Here’s the part worth reading twice, because the panic online got ahead of the facts.

If you’re already a Pro subscriber, nothing changes. Your account keeps working, your limits stay where they were. In fact, OpenAI raised Codex usage limits as recently as August, so existing paid users are in better shape than they were a month ago.

If you’re on the free plan, nothing changes either. Same access as yesterday.

The lock only applies to people trying to become new ChatGPT Pro subscribers today. That’s it. Plus, Go, and the API remain open for business, which matters a lot for the next section.

Plan Price New sign-ups status
Free $0 Open
Go ~$8/mo Open
Plus $20/mo Open
Pro $200/mo Paused (new sign-ups only)
API Pay per token Open

(One wrinkle worth knowing: pricing trackers have also listed a $100 mid-tier version of Pro at 5x Plus usage, so check what’s actually offered when sign-ups resume. The headline $200 tier is the one getting all the attention.)

Why this is actually a good sign for your wallet

Sounds backwards, so let me explain.

A company pausing sign-ups to a $200 plan is telling you something important: capacity is scarce, demand is real, and they’d rather protect existing service quality than squeeze every dollar. That’s rare discipline in this industry.

There’s also a hidden upside for you. Subscription FOMO is how AI companies convert casual users into big spenders. But the model everyone wants access to is the same one paying customers on lower tiers are using, just with tighter ceilings. Plus subscribers get Astra access too, and the API sells the same intelligence by the token.

Before you commit to any big subscription, run the numbers on what you actually use. Most people discover their monthly usage fits comfortably inside a much cheaper plan. Our breakdown of ChatGPT Business premium seats and pricing shows how the math works out for teams, and the same logic applies solo.

Your 4 options while Pro is locked

Option 1: grab Plus and wait

At $20 a month, Plus gets you the flagship models including Astra with reasonable limits, plus image generation, voice, projects, expanded deep research, and solid Codex usage. Start here if you’re new to paid ChatGPT. If you hit the ceiling constantly for weeks, that’s your evidence you actually need ChatGPT Pro, and you’ll upgrade the day it reopens with zero guilt. Worst case, you spent $20 to learn your usage is lighter than you thought.

Option 2: use the API for your heavy jobs

Here’s the trick most people miss: the Pro subscription’s big ceiling mostly matters for chat volume and agentic features. But batch work, document processing, and automation don’t need a subscription at all. They need API credits, which anyone can buy right now.

Route your heavy automated tasks through the API and keep your chat plan light. Pair this with the peak and off-peak pricing trick that providers like DeepSeek offer, and your effective cost can drop below what any subscription costs. We documented a full cost-control setup in our model routing guide.

Option 3: let a competitor court you

Nothing opens the checkbook like competition. Google, Anthropic, and xAI all sell power tiers at similar price points, and all of them are actively fishing for unhappy OpenAI customers this week. If you were about to pay $200 anyway, spend one evening testing Gemini or Claude against your real workload. Worst case, you confirm OpenAI is worth the wait. Best case, you find a better deal.

Option 4: just wait

Honestly underrated. Pauses like this usually last days, not months. OpenAI loses real money every day the door is shut, so the incentive to reopen is enormous. Set a reminder to check next week. Meanwhile the free tier keeps working for casual use, and our guide on what to do when ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini go down covers the outage playbook if things get worse.

Has OpenAI done this before?

Yes, and that history tells you how this usually ends.

Back in November 2023, right after its DevDay event blew up, OpenAI paused new ChatGPT Plus sign-ups when demand “exceeded our capacity,” as Sam Altman put it at the time. That pause lasted about a week before the doors swung back open, and everyone who waited lost nothing except early access.

The pattern repeats because the physics haven’t changed. Every big model launch creates a demand spike, GPUs are finite, and someone at OpenAI has to decide between slowing everyone down or stopping new sign-ups at the door. They keep choosing the door, which is annoying for newcomers but protective for anyone already inside.

Is ChatGPT Pro even worth $200 when it returns?

Let’s do the math before you rush back.

Pro buys you roughly 20 times the usage of Plus, priority access at peak times, and the highest reasoning settings. That’s genuinely valuable if you run an agency, ship code all day, or process documents by the hundred. For a solo user who chats, writes, and researches? Plus at $20 covers the vast majority of real workloads, and most Pro subscribers would survive on it.

A simple test: track how many times you actually hit your Plus limits over the next two weeks. If the answer is “never,” you just saved $180 a month. If it’s “daily,” the upgrade will be there when the doors reopen, and your usage log is proof you’re not paying for an identity badge.

For context on what’s driving all this demand, our explainer on Astra’s capabilities and its controversial sides covers what the model can actually do.

The takeaway

Nobody enjoys hitting a paywall, but this one has a silver lining: it’s a forced pause on a $200 decision you probably didn’t need to make this week anyway. Start with Plus, push heavy jobs through the API, test the competition while their sales teams are hungry, and let your actual usage tell you whether Pro is ever worth it.

The door reopens eventually, so walk in with data, not FOMO.
