Anthropic's Claude for Startups program includes a free year of Claude Team

A free year of Claude Team plus $1,000 in API credits is on the table right now, and most founders have no idea it exists. That’s the Claude for Startups program, Anthropic announced it at SF Tech Week this week, and applying takes about two minutes. If your AI tool budget is held together with duct tape, keep reading.

What Anthropic is actually giving away

The offer sounds inflated until you read the official program page, so I did. Approved companies get four things.

One year of Claude Team free, for up to five Premium seats, if you’re new to Team plans. $1,000 in Claude API credits per company. Up to $45K in partner offers through something called the Claude Startup Stack. And office hours with Anthropic’s Applied AI team, plus invites to events like Founder House and hackathons.

Do the math on the seats. A premium Team seat costs $100 per month on annual billing, or $125 billed monthly. Five premium seats for a year is up to $6,000 at annual pricing that Anthropic simply isn’t charging you. Add the $1,000 in API credits and you’re north of $7,000 in real value before the partner deals even enter the picture.

Item Cost normally With the program
Claude Team, premium seat $100/mo annual ($125 monthly) $0 for 12 months
Claude API usage Pay as you go $1,000 in credits
Partner tools (Startup Stack) Varies Up to $45K in offers
Applied AI office hours Not for sale Included

Who qualifies for Claude for Startups

The official requirements are shorter than you’d expect. You need a Claude Console account. Your company email also has to match your website’s domain, so a Gmail address won’t cut it. And you need a short description of what you’re building, plus a promise to comply with Anthropic’s supportability policies.

That’s the official list. In practice, Anthropic’s credit programs have historically targeted early-stage companies, and third-party guides that track these programs mention things like institutional funding and a company age under roughly four years for the bigger credit tiers. I couldn’t verify those extra filters on the official page, so treat them as unconfirmed. Applying costs nothing either way, and the worst outcome is a no.

One detail matters more than it looks: the email-domain requirement kills most fake applications, but it also means solo founders without a proper domain should set one up first. It costs roughly $12 a year. Don’t let that be the reason you get rejected.

How to apply, step by step

The whole thing is self-serve on the official Claude for Startups page. Here’s the sequence.

First, create a Claude Console account at platform.claude.com using your company email.

Then go to the program page and click the apply button, which routes to the startups application form.

Fill in your company email, your website, and a short description of what you’re building with Claude. Two minutes, maybe three if you type slowly. Hit submit and watch your inbox: Anthropic says accepted founders get an email with a link to the Claude Startups page in Claude Console, where you claim the Team offer.

No pitch deck. No warm intro. The form is free. The boring truth is that most founders skip offers like this purely because applying requires five uninterrupted minutes.

What to actually spend the credits on

Free credits burn fast when you have no plan for them. A little structure helps.

Start with the API credits on something that touches revenue. Customer support drafts, lead qualification, content generation for your own product, that kind of thing. Our breakdown of what an AI agent really costs shows why API spend explodes without usage limits, and the Console lets you set spend caps from day one. Set one.

Then use the free Team seats for the boring operational stuff. Meeting summaries, drafting investor updates, turning customer calls into tickets. The premium seats include five times the usage of standard seats, which matters if your team lives in Claude all day.

Here’s my honest take on the Startup Stack: treat it as a bonus, not the reason to apply. Partner offers skew toward tools you’d evaluate anyway, and $45K in “offer value” usually means discounts, not free money. Take what’s useful, ignore the rest.

How this fits the broader AI land grab

Anthropic isn’t being generous out of kindness. Every major lab is subsidizing startups right now because whatever stack a founder picks at seed stage tends to survive into Series B. The Claude for Startups program is customer acquisition, and the $45K partner stack locks in a whole ecosystem around Claude.

For founders, the cynicism doesn’t matter. Free is free. If you’re already paying for Claude Team, the new-to-Team requirement probably disqualifies you from the free year, which stings a little, though the $1,000 API credits are for every approved company regardless. If you’re pre-revenue and bootstrapping, this is one of the better offers on the market right now, and our look at how AI subscription plans stack up shows how quickly seat costs multiply once a team grows past two or three people.

It’s also worth connecting this to the bigger picture for your career, not just your company. Employers keep paying premiums for AI skills, and running a startup on Anthropic’s stack teaches you exactly the workflow those employers are shopping for. The credits are tuition you don’t pay for.

Mistakes that get applications rejected

Because the form is short, people rush it. Three mistakes show up again and again with programs like this.

Applying with a personal email instead of your domain email is the obvious one, and it’s an automatic filter. A close second is describing your company in vague startup-speak instead of saying what you’re actually building with Claude. “AI-native platform for modern workflows” tells reviewers nothing. “We use Claude to draft insurance claim summaries for independent brokers” gives them something to approve. Third, don’t apply before your website is live, since reviewers check the domain you provide.

None of this is complicated. It’s just the difference between a two-minute form and a two-week redo.

The fine print worth knowing

Read these before you apply, not after.

The free year applies if you’re new to Claude Team. Existing Team customers get the API credits but apparently not the seat giveaway. Credits land in the Console organization you apply with, so don’t create it under a throwaway email you’ll lose access to. Program terms can change at Anthropic’s discretion, which is standard language, but it means “free year” is a snapshot, not a contract forever. And the office hours and events are limited-perk style benefits, so actual value there depends on your city and timing. Nothing on the program page lists an expiration date for the credits, but check the terms in Console when yours land.

Verdict: apply or skip?

Apply. It costs two minutes and a $12 domain if you don’t have one, and the worst case is a polite no. The Claude for Startups program is giving away up to $7,000 in immediately usable AI budget, and the requirements are trivial for any real company. Skip it only if you genuinely don’t use AI in your workflow yet, and even then, $1,000 in credits is a decent reason to start.
