Audible AI features: talk to characters in audiobooks

Audible's new AI features start with Dracula and 1984

Losing track of who’s talking is the oldest problem in audiobooks. Novels love a crowded tavern scene, and your ears get four characters deep before you realize the count is actually the lawyer. Audible AI features rolling out this week fix that, and they go further: one of them lets you actually talk to Dracula’s servant and he talks back.

Sounds like a gimmick. After looking at what shipped, it’s more interesting than that.

The three new features, briefly

Audible announced the trio on October 1 as it fights off Spotify’s push into audiobooks, and it’s the company’s biggest Audible AI push yet. Here’s the short version of what’s arriving:

Feature What it does First title Status
Character guide Shows who’s speaking in real time, plus spoiler-free character cards with narrator bios Dracula (Audible Original) Beta
Interactive stories Generative AI lets you converse with a character who reacts in real time Dracula (Renfield) Beta
Explore visuals Displays imagery and bonus info about places mentioned in the book The Cultural Tutor Beta

All three are beta features, and Audible says more titles are coming. For now the lineup includes the new Dracula Audible Original, George Orwell’s 1984, and an upcoming sci-fi title called Exoplanet from Benjamin Percy.

The character guide solves a real problem

Ask anyone who listens to fantasy or Russian classics: keeping names straight by ear is brutal. Reading gives you the luxury of flipping back a page. Listening punishes you for blinking, because rewinding means finding the exact spot where the duke was introduced, twenty minutes ago.

The Audible AI character guide puts who’s speaking right on the player page as the story moves. It also offers character cards built to be spoiler-free, which show off the narrator behind each voice along with their bio. That second part is a nice touch for anyone who has ever thought “wait, I know that voice” during an audiobook.

Audible says listeners will eventually be able to ask the guide questions about the story as it unfolds. So the feature starts as a who’s-who reference and grows into something closer to a reading companion. For long books with big casts, that’s genuinely useful, not just shiny.

Talking to Dracula: how interactive stories work

This is the headline grabber, so let’s keep it honest about what it is. Powered by generative AI, the interactive story drops you into a scene with Renfield, Dracula’s loyal servant. He speaks first, hands you a role, a goal, and some stakes. Then you respond in your own words, out loud, and he reacts in real time.

It’s closer to voice-acting improv than a chatbot. You’re not typing prompts into a box. You’re inside the story’s world for a few minutes, saying what your character would say.

Audible also addressed the obvious fear: will the AI make Dracula order a pizza? The company says creators are involved in the foundations of each interactive story, so the experience stays faithful to the original work. That guardrail matters, because audiobook fans are exactly the audience most protective of the source material. If Renfield starts sounding like a customer service bot, this feature dies on arrival, and Audible clearly knows it.

Why Audible is doing this now

Follow the money. US audiobook sales hit $2.43 billion in 2025, and Spotify has been aggressively bundling audiobooks into its subscriptions. Earlier this year Audible answered with a cheaper Standard plan at $8.99 a month, and now this: Audible AI features that Spotify’s music-first app can’t easily copy.

There’s a logic here beyond competition. Audiobooks grew because phones got big and schedules got brutal, with BookTok pushing fiction, thrillers, and romantasy into the mainstream. Interactive features give listeners a reason to pick Audible specifically, the same way multiplayer gave gamers a reason to pick a console. “More time spent with stories benefits everyone who helps bring them to life,” said chief content officer Rachel Ghiazza in the launch announcement, which is corporate-speak for “engagement is the metric.”

If you’re curious how fast AI audio is moving in general, we covered Gemini turning any script into a realistic voice a few weeks back. The tech underneath all of this is getting cheap fast.

Which books have it and how to try it

The rollout is small on purpose. Start here:

  1. Open the Audible app and update it first.
  2. Search for the Dracula Audible Original, published October 1.
  3. Start playing and look for the character guide on the player page.
  4. For interactive stories, pick the Renfield entry point and grant mic access.

That’s it. No separate purchase, as far as the announcement describes it, though you’ll need an Audible membership for the titles themselves. Expect the lineup to grow quietly over the next few months if the beta data looks good.

Not an Audible user? The features alone won’t justify a subscription yet, since they cover three books. If you just want to sample AI audio weirdness elsewhere, our guide on spotting AI music on Spotify shows how far generated audio has already spread on the other app.

What this means for listeners

Two audiences should pay attention. First, heavy listeners of dense fiction get an accessibility win: the character guide is the kind of feature that makes 40-hour fantasy epics actually finishable. Second, curious newcomers get a low-stakes way to play with consumer AI without signing up for yet another app, since it’s all inside something they may already pay for.

Everyone else? Watch this space but don’t rush. The interactive part is genuinely new, yet three titles is a demo, not a library. Check back in six months and the story will either be “quietly killed” or “on every bestseller,” and either outcome tells you where audiobooks are headed.

The takeaway

If you already have Audible, open the Dracula Original today and try the character guide, because it’s the most immediately useful of the three. The Audible AI experiment is a beta with a tiny library, but it’s the first time talking to a book has been a product instead of a party trick.
