AI website builders compared by price, free tier, and code export capability

Building a website used to mean three weeks of WordPress tutorials, a theme that never looked like the demo, and at least one meltdown over CSS. The best AI website builders in 2026 skip all of that. You type a sentence, and the site appears.

But here’s what nobody tells you: most of these tools generate a pretty homepage and then fall apart when you need a contact form that actually sends email. I’ve spent the last few weeks watching people build sites with nine different AI website builders, and the gap between the marketing and reality is wild.

What makes a good AI website builder

Honestly, it comes down to four things. Speed (how fast does it go from prompt to live site?), control (can you edit the result or are you stuck with what the AI decided?), portability (can you export the code or are you locked into their platform?), and price (does the free tier let you actually publish, or is it just a demo?).

Plenty of AI website builders nail the first one. The demo is always impressive. Type “make me a bakery website” and watch the magic happen. But then you want to change the font, add a second page, or connect a custom domain, and suddenly you’re staring at a $25/month paywall.

The tools below are the ones that earned their spot. Some are free. Some cost money but deliver enough value to justify it. None of them are perfect.

Best AI website builders compared

Here’s the quick side-by-side before we get into the details:

Tool Starting price Free tier Code export Best for
ChatGPT Sites Free Yes (full) No Beginners, zero setup
Bolt.new $20/mo Yes (limited) Yes Developers, prototypes
v0 (Vercel) $20/mo Yes (limited) Yes Next.js developers
Lovable $25/mo Trial only Yes Full-stack apps
Replit Agent $25/mo Trial only Yes Cloud-based development
10Web $10/mo No No (WordPress) WordPress users
Hostinger AI $3/mo No No Budget hosting + builder
Framer AI $5/mo Yes (limited) No Design-focused sites
Durable $12/mo Trial only No Service businesses

ChatGPT Sites — the free option that just works

If you already have a ChatGPT account, you have an AI website builder. ChatGPT Sites launched earlier this year and it’s genuinely free. No trial, no “free for 14 days.” Free free.

You describe what you want, it builds a full React-based site, and you can publish it instantly. The hosting is handled. Custom domains are supported. For someone who just needs a portfolio page or a simple landing page for their side hustle, this is hard to beat.

We already did a deep dive on this, including a step-by-step guide to building a website with ChatGPT Sites. The short version: it deploys without asking permission, writes convincing headlines, and still won’t fake a working contact form. For most people who need a simple site up today, this is where I’d start.

The catch? You can’t export the code. Your site lives in ChatGPT’s ecosystem. If you want to move it somewhere else later, you’re starting over.

Bolt.new — for people who want the code

Bolt.new runs entirely in your browser. It uses something called WebContainers to spin up a full development environment, and when it builds a site, you get the actual code. React, Vue, Svelte, whatever JavaScript framework you want.

This matters because most AI website builders treat the code as a trade secret. Bolt treats it as the point. You prompt, it builds, and then you can take the output and deploy it anywhere. Vercel, Netlify, your own server, doesn’t matter.

The free tier exists but it’s limited. You’ll hit a token cap pretty fast if you’re iterating a lot. Still, for a prototype or a weekend project, it’s enough to get something real.

v0 by Vercel — the developer favorite

v0 comes from Vercel, the company behind Next.js. It’s designed for people who already know what Next.js is. If that’s not you, this tool will feel confusing.

But if it is you? v0 is excellent. It generates clean React components, integrates perfectly with Vercel’s deployment pipeline, and the code quality is genuinely good. You can copy-paste it directly into an existing project.

The pricing is token-based, which means heavy iteration gets expensive. Each time you ask the AI to refine a component, it costs tokens. The free tier gives you enough to try it out, but serious use means paying.

Lovable — full-stack apps from a prompt

Lovable goes further than most AI website builders. Instead of just generating a frontend, it connects to Supabase for your backend. So you can build something with a real database, user authentication, and API endpoints without writing any code.

That’s impressive. It’s also where things get unpredictable. The more complex the app, the more likely the AI will generate something that almost works but has a weird bug you can’t diagnose without reading the code. And if you can’t read the code, you probably shouldn’t be building a full-stack app with an AI tool.

For simple apps though, like a basic CRUD tool or a prototype to show investors, Lovable delivers.

10Web — if you need WordPress

10Web is the only AI website builder on this list that outputs WordPress. It generates a full WordPress site with hosting included, which means you get the world’s most popular CMS with AI doing the heavy lifting on design and content.

Starting at $10/month, it’s not the cheapest, but it includes hosting. And since it’s WordPress, you have access to thousands of plugins, themes, and the entire WordPress ecosystem. If you’re already invested in WordPress or your client demands it, this is your option.

The AI generation is decent but not mind-blowing. It leans toward clean, professional templates rather than creative designs. Think “small business website” rather than “award-winning portfolio.”

Hostinger AI — cheapest all-in-one

Hostinger bundles an AI website builder with their hosting plans starting around $3/month. That’s ridiculously cheap. You get hosting, a domain, SSL, and the builder all in one package.

The builder itself is basic. It generates a site from a prompt, but customization options are limited compared to ChatGPT Sites or Bolt. It’s more like a slightly smarter version of traditional template-based builders than a true AI website generator.

Still, for someone who needs a website and hosting and has $3, it’s a legitimate option. Just don’t expect the AI to do anything beyond generating an initial layout.

Framer AI — for design-obsessed people

Framer was already a powerful design tool before they added AI. The AI generation feature builds pages that look stunning. Seriously, the default output is better looking than most professional agency work.

But Framer is a design tool first and a website builder second. If you want pixel-perfect control over every element, this is your jam. If you just want a website that works without learning a design tool, it’s overkill.

At $5/month for the basic plan, it’s affordable. The free tier lets you experiment but doesn’t allow custom domains.

Durable — 30 seconds to a service business site

Durable’s pitch is simple: get a website in 30 seconds. It’s aimed squarely at service businesses like plumbers, photographers, consultants, and similar solo operators.

You type your business name and industry, and it generates a full site with contact form, service list, and stock photos that actually fit your business type. It’s the fastest path from “I need a website” to “I have a website.”

The limitation is depth. Once the site is generated, editing options are constrained. You can change text and images, but structural changes require starting over. At $12/month, it’s reasonable for what it offers, but don’t expect to build anything complex.

How to choose the right AI website builder for you

Start with this question: what happens after the AI generates the site?

If the answer is “nothing, I just need it to exist,” go with ChatGPT Sites. It’s free, it works, and for a portfolio or simple landing page, it’s plenty. We’ve seen people get a real site live in under a minute.

If the answer is “I want to customize and deploy it myself,” you need Bolt.new or v0. Both give you real code you can take anywhere. Bolt is more flexible (any framework), v0 is better if you’re already in the Vercel ecosystem.

If the answer is “I need WordPress specifically,” 10Web is the only real option here. No other AI builder outputs WordPress natively.

And if the answer is “I’m running a service business and need a site by tomorrow,” Durable gets you there faster than anything else.

What AI website builders still cannot do

Here’s the honest part that most reviews skip. AI website builders are great at generating a starting point. They’re terrible at finishing the job.

Forms that actually submit data and send emails? Still flaky across most tools. E-commerce functionality beyond a basic product page? You’ll need traditional tools for that. Custom integrations with CRMs, booking systems, or inventory management? Almost certainly manual work.

The other thing: AI-generated content is obvious. The headlines, the button text, the “about us” paragraphs. They all have that slightly generic AI flavor. You’ll need to rewrite most of the copy to sound like a real person wrote it.

That’s not a dealbreaker. Think of these tools as getting you 70% of the way there in 5% of the time. The last 30%, the part that makes a website feel real and functional, still needs a human. But starting from 70% beats starting from a blank page every time.
