LibreOffice AI policy: why it says no on purpose

LibreOffice will not add generative AI features, says The Document Foundation

Your word processor is watching. That is the quiet deal most of us accepted, and the new LibreOffice AI policy is the first big refusal.

This week, The Document Foundation made something close to tech heresy official: LibreOffice AI features will not happen, at least not in any default install. While Microsoft, Google, and half the startup world bolt chatbots onto everything with a cursor, the nonprofit behind the free office suite published a policy that says no. Not “soon”. Not “we’re exploring it”. No.

Here is why that weird, stubborn position might be exactly what your documents need, and when a no-AI office suite beats a smarter one.

What The Document Foundation actually announced

The statement landed alongside LibreOffice’s latest release, which now ships with a line you rarely see in 2026 software marketing: this suite “contains no generative AI features.” The Foundation calls it a deliberate design position, not an oversight.

The policy is not a ban forever, and the Foundation is careful about that. Officials describe it as an assessment of the technology today, not a judgement on the sector. In fact, the conditions for reversing the LibreOffice AI policy are public. First, any AI integration would have to keep your data on your device. Second, it could not lock users into a single AI provider. And right now, they say, no integration on the market meets both requirements.

Until that changes, the default install stays AI-free. Extensions remain available for people who want to connect their own local models, which is the escape hatch that keeps power users happy.

The privacy math nobody shows you

Most AI office features work the same way: your text gets packaged up, sent to a remote server, processed on hardware you will never see, and sent back. The vendor promises the data is not retained. Probably. Under some settings. Assuming you toggled the right switches.

The LibreOffice AI ban cuts through that entire conversation. Documents never leave the machine because there is no machine to leave. No network connection is required at any point, which also means the suite works the same on a plane, in a basement archive, or on a laptop with the Wi-Fi switch flipped off.

The Foundation put it in terms that should make every compliance officer smile: any organization handling confidential, legally privileged, or personal data needs to know where that data goes, and the only assurance that survives an audit is that it does not leave the machine. Read that twice. It is not anti-AI rhetoric. It is audit logic.

When a no-AI office suite is the better tool

Let me be honest about the tradeoff, because “no AI” also means no shortcuts. If your daily work is drafting first-pass emails and you love an AI assistant, LibreOffice will feel slower than Copilot-infused Word. Fine. Different jobs.

But several situations flip the math completely, and they are more common than you would think.

Legal and contract work. Contracts, NDAs, and case files are exactly the material you cannot paste into a cloud model without reading the fine print. In fact, plenty of firms ban it outright. An offline suite sidesteps the policy problem entirely.

Medical, HR, and financial records. Same logic, higher stakes. If a spreadsheet of employee salaries or patient schedules touches a cloud AI feature, that is an incident waiting for an investigator.

Anything under NDA. Client work with confidentiality clauses gets simple: the data physically cannot leak through the tool, because the tool has nowhere to send it.

Old hardware and bad connections. LibreOffice runs happily on decade-old laptops with no subscription and no account. Students, volunteers, and small nonprofits have kept this suite alive for two decades for a reason.

If any of those describe you, the “missing” AI features were never features. They were liabilities with a friendly interface.

How to make the switch without losing your files

Moving to a LibreOffice AI-free setup is easier than most people expect, because the suite opens Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats directly.

One: download the suite free from the official LibreOffice website and install it. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and the installer is smaller than a single Office update.

Two: open your existing .docx or .xlsx files normally. Formatting on everyday documents survives the trip well. Complex files with heavy macros deserve a test pass first, but that takes minutes, not days.

Three: set LibreOffice as your default app for Office files, and disable the “keep in Word format” warnings if they annoy you. The suite saves back to Microsoft formats by default, so collaborators on Office never notice.

Four, optional: if you do want AI without the cloud, community extensions connect LibreOffice to local models running on your own machine. That path keeps everything on-device, and our guide to running a local LLM on your phone covers the same trick in your pocket. Our local AI security checklist is worth a skim before you plug anything in.

Total cost: zero. Total data leaving your machine: zero. That is the whole pitch, and it is a strange relief in 2026.

The bigger trend: “no AI” becomes a selling point

Zoom out, because this announcement is not really about office software. It is part of a small but growing backlash where software markets itself by what it refuses to do. Tools now advertise “no AI” the way cereal once advertised “no sugar.” Some of it is gimmick. In LibreOffice’s case, it is policy, backed by a nonprofit structure that does not answer to ad revenue or token sales.

Will it last? Probably not in this exact form. The Foundation left the door open, and if local models get good enough to satisfy their two conditions, an offline AI assistant could eventually appear. That outcome would be the best of both worlds: smarts without surveillance.

Until then, the choice is refreshingly clear. If you want an AI copilot, the big suites are genuinely good at it, and you should price what your data is worth. If you want your documents to stay yours, LibreOffice just became the loudest no in software, and sometimes no is the feature.

Your move this week

Pick your least sensitive recurring document task, invoicing, meeting notes, whatever, and run it through LibreOffice for one week. If nothing in your workflow actually needed the cloud, keep it for the sensitive stuff and enjoy the audit-proof peace of mind. Check the extensions library first if you are curious about local AI add-ons, and remember: free, offline, and boring can be the most professional choice on the list.
