Character.ai entered Chapter 11 in October 2026, with Disney licensing part of its tech.

Character.ai filed for bankruptcy. If you have years of conversations saved on the app, you have a deadline: the sale wraps up around the end of November. Here’s what happens to your chats, your subscription, and your data.

The AI companion app that millions of people used daily just went from “struggling startup” to “court-supervised sale.” On October 12, the Character.ai bankruptcy filing made it official: a voluntary Chapter 11 process, and Disney is first in line with $20 million for a piece of the company. The platform still works today. But if you have chats on there that matter to you, this is the moment to export them, not next month.

Why Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

The official reason is “significant legal, regulatory, and operational headwinds,” which is corporate speak for: the lawsuits were piling up and the bills were bigger than the revenue. Character.ai grew fast after launching in 2022, and it grew extremely popular with younger users. That popularity came with a price. The company faced multiple lawsuits over interactions between minors and its chatbots, and those cases created real legal exposure that scared off advertisers and partners.

The Character.ai bankruptcy didn’t come out of nowhere. The board reviewed its options and concluded that a court-supervised sale was the best way to maximize whatever value was left. In plain English: instead of shutting down overnight, the company put itself up for sale with a judge watching the process. That gives users time to adjust, and it gives buyers a way to acquire assets without inheriting every risk.

The Disney deal, explained simply

Disney agreed to pay $20 million for a non-exclusive, perpetual license to Character.ai’s intellectual property. Let’s translate that. Non-exclusive means other companies can still license the same tech. Perpetual means Disney keeps it forever, even if Character.ai vanishes next year. Reuters reports the deal also includes transition services from former Character.ai employees that Disney has already hired.

Is Disney buying the app your teenager uses? No. Disney is buying the tech and some of the people. The app itself is up for sale as part of the bankruptcy process, and nobody knows who ends up with it, or if anyone does.

What happens to your chats and account right now

Here’s the part most headlines skip: the immediate effects of the Character.ai bankruptcy on your account are zero. The service is still running. Subscriptions are still active and billing continues as normal for now. Your conversations haven’t gone anywhere. The company’s own statement says the platform remains “up and running” and that data practices are unchanged under the existing privacy policy.

But “unchanged for now” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The company expects the sale process to wrap up by the end of November or early December 2026. If no buyer shows up with an acceptable bid, the platform gets wound down entirely. There is no published plan for what happens to chat history if that happens, which is exactly why exporting now matters.

How to export your Character.ai data before it’s too late

Exporting your data is free and takes a few minutes:

  1. Open the Character.ai app or website and log in.
  2. Go to your profile settings and look for the account section.
  3. Choose the option to export your data or delete your account (deletion also triggers an export option).
  4. Wait for the download link. You’ll get an archive of your chats and account info.

Save that archive to your own drive, by the way. A download link sitting in an inbox tied to a company in Chapter 11 is not a backup. If old conversations are missing from the file, export again before the sale closes.

If you pay for c.ai+, check what the bankruptcy means for your renewal before the next billing date. The company says paid subscriptions remain active and that it will notify subscribers in advance if paid features change. Still, watching your card statement beats trusting a company in Chapter 11.

Who is to blame for the Character.ai bankruptcy

Two forces crushed this company, and only one of them gets headlines. The obvious one is the litigation over minor safety. That’s serious stuff, and the company’s own filing acknowledges it.

The quieter one is economics. Character.ai ran expensive open models that anyone could chat with for free, at a scale of millions of daily messages. Compute bills like that don’t leave much profit. When Google hired away the founders in 2023 and licensed the tech, many observers saw the writing on the wall: the expensive part (the models) went to Google, and the company kept the hard part (the bills and the lawsuits).

There’s also a broader lesson here that applies beyond one app. When your entire product depends on a company’s survival, you don’t own anything. We saw the same pattern when AI note-taking apps and AI hardware gadgets folded. Your data deserves an exit plan. We covered how AI agent privacy works in practice, and the same rule applies here: assume anything stored on a struggling platform is temporary.

What happens to users if no buyer shows up

If the sale produces no acceptable bid, Character.ai says the platform will be wound down. A wind-down means servers eventually shut off, apps stop working, and any data left behind is gone for practical purposes. The court filings are public through Stretto, the claims agent, if you want to follow along.

The realistic scenarios in order of likelihood:

  • A buyer keeps it running — someone acquires the platform and the app survives with new owners.
  • An asset sale only — the tech and team go to a buyer, the app shuts down, chats disappear.
  • A slow fade — no buyer, minimal wind-down, service degrades until it’s unusable.

Keep the timeline in mind. The company expects the court-supervised sale to wrap up by late November or early December, which makes November the real deadline for anything you want to keep. “Export later” is a risky plan when later might land after the servers power down.

Either way, the version of Character.ai you use in December may not be the one you’re using today. Treat the next six weeks as a grace period.

Should you look for a Character.ai alternative now

Honest answer: it depends on how much you use it. If you still want AI characters in your pocket, we compared where AI characters are heading in audiobooks, which is a safer bet than any bankruptcy-stage startup. If you only opened it twice, exporting your data once is enough.

The bigger takeaway has nothing to do with one app. AI companions are products, and products die. We’ve watched AI startups flame out all year, and the IMF just warned about AI share prices propping up financial markets. Don’t build routines, memories, or workflows on a free product without an exit plan. That’s the real lesson of the Character.ai bankruptcy, and it’ll apply to the next one too.

Here’s what to do today: log in, export your chat archive, screenshot anything that matters, and check your subscription renewal date. It takes ten minutes. Do it while the servers are still humming.
