The new Apple TV 4K costs $299, and that number broke a lot of brains this week. Apple’s last streaming box launched at $129. So what exactly did Apple pack in to justify more than double the price?
What the $299 actually buys
Apple announced the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K on October 13, and pre-orders opened the same day. Store shelves get it on November 13. Under the hood sits an A19 chip with up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU than the A15 in the 2022 model. There’s also a dedicated AV1 decoder, which means streaming services can push high-quality video while using less bandwidth.
The Siri Remote got smarter too. It now supports Find My with Precision Finding, and you can play a sound on it when it vanishes into the couch cushions. Small thing. You’ll use it constantly.
For context, this launch wasn’t alone: Apple also rolled out HomeView, a HomePod mini 2, and an Apple Home Collection accessory line the same morning. The company is clearly going after your living room as a whole, not just your watchlist.
Siri AI is the whole pitch
Here’s where the money went. Siri AI on the new box is a full-screen, conversational experience: ask “What Apple TV shows won at the Emmy Awards this year?” and you get poster art pulled from the Apple TV app plus suggestions like “More award-winning comedies” to keep exploring.
While you watch, you can fire off follow-ups like “Where was Pluribus filmed?” or “Is this appropriate for a 15-year-old?” Answers appear in a compact overlay, so you don’t lose the scene you’re watching. And if you pair an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, Siri can tap personal context, which means “Play the show Alinda recommended” actually works.
Hands-free is the sleeper feature
The new box has three far-field microphones built in. Advanced echo cancellation isolates your voice from the audio already playing, so a simple “Hey Siri” works mid-explosion scene. On older models you hold a button on the remote; here you just talk from across the room.
Privacy-minded folks get a real answer as well. Apple processes microphone data in what it calls Secure Exclaves, protected runtimes that tvOS, apps, you, and Apple itself can’t access. Voice requests route through on-device processing or Private Cloud Compute, where data is neither stored nor accessible to anyone.
Your old box gets Siri AI too
This is the part most headlines skipped. Siri AI arrives as a beta in tvOS 27.2, and it works on any Apple TV 4K from the 2nd generation (2021) onward. You’ll get the conversational search and the overlay answers; you’ll just miss the hands-free microphones and the raw speed.
Setup has strings, though. The home owner in the Apple Home app needs an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad running the latest software, with Siri AI turned on. Language support is English only at launch, covering the US, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK.
The rollout so far
Siri AI first landed on September 14, when Apple shipped it as a beta across its newest iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The TV version arriving in October is the third stop, and it’s arguably the most natural fit, because watching stuff is a lean-back activity where typing is terrible and remotes are worse. Reporting from PPC Land says the underlying models were custom-built with help from Google’s Gemini technology, running on device and on Apple’s own servers.
Keep expectations calibrated anyway. It’s a beta. Requests are capped by daily usage limits, some features need that paid tier eventually, and anyone outside the eight launch countries is waiting longer still.

Apple TV 4K (2022) vs (2026) at a glance
| Apple TV 4K (2022) | Apple TV 4K (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Launch price | $129 | $299 |
| Chip | A15 Bionic | A19 (50% faster CPU, 2x faster GPU) |
| Hands-free “Hey Siri” | No, remote button only | Yes, 3 far-field microphones |
| Remote finder | None | Find My, Precision Finding, play sound |
| Siri AI (beta) | Yes, via tvOS 27.2 | Yes, via tvOS 27.2 |
Notice the pattern: the software upgrade is free, while the hardware conveniences are not.
Should you actually upgrade?
Honest take? Most people shouldn’t, yet. If you own a 2021 or 2022 box, Siri AI lands on yours for free once the beta update arrives. The $299 buys speed, microphones, and a findable remote. Nice things. Not $170 nicer if your current setup already works.
There’s also a cost angle hiding in the footnotes. Certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models carry daily usage limits, and Apple says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. Translation: the assistant you’re paying $299 for may eventually ask for a subscription too.
So who should buy? Kitchens, kids, and anyone who lost the remote twice this week. Hands-free control of both entertainment and smart home accessories is genuinely useful when your hands are full.
Surround sound without the receiver
Here’s the feature I didn’t expect at this price. Pair the new box with four HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers, and Apple claims its most immersive home theater setup ever. The speakers recognize their position in the room, then automatically calibrate audio timing and levels to your space. No receiver, no speaker wire, no calibration disc.
Worth doing the math on, though. Four HomePod mini 2 units at their own price tag turn that $299 box into a much bigger purchase. It’s a clever system if you already own the speakers; an expensive one if you’re starting from zero.
The smart home angle
If you’re deep into the Apple smart home, the new box acts as a home hub, and it now generates camera activity descriptions and summarized notifications in the Home app using Apple Intelligence. Instead of scrubbing through a doorbell clip, you read a sentence that says what happened. Built-in Wi-Fi and Thread handle accessory connections, and guest mode plus automations carry over from previous generations.
Camera footage stays private the same way voice does. HomeKit Secure Video is stored end-to-end encrypted, so nobody at Apple can watch your porch.
Not married to Apple’s ecosystem? We compared prices on Amazon’s latest Alexa tablets, and the math looks different over there.
If you’re buying one, do this
First, pre-order the Apple TV 4K from apple.com at $299, or choose 6 monthly payments of $49.83 through Apple Card installments (0% APR, US customers only). Pre-orders opened in the US and 29 other countries on announcement day. It ships November 13.
Meanwhile, owners of older boxes should update to tvOS 27.2 when it lands and switch on Siri AI in settings. During setup, make sure your iPhone or iPad runs the latest software and has Siri AI enabled, because the TV assistant won’t activate without it. Once you’re in, test the conversational searches and the mid-show follow-up questions. That’s where the feature actually shines.
The takeaway
The Apple TV 4K decision comes down to one question: do you want to talk to your TV from across the room? If yes, pre-order. If no, install the beta on your current box and keep the $299.
